The VN-Index (VNI) managed to inch up in September despite COVID-19 causing serious disruptions in numerous cities/provinces. The VNI continued its recovery trend in September due to easing restrictions in southern provinces and the expectation for the reopening of HCMC and major industrial provinces in the South. However, the uptrend was somewhat affected by the impact of the Evergrande debt crisis on global markets in addition to cautious sentiment month-end ahead of Q3 earnings and GDP results (the VNI dropped 1.9% on September 27). Nevertheless, the VNI managed to recover at the end of the month, closing the month at 1,342.1 points (+0.8% MoM). In 9M 2021, the VNI increased 21.6% and outperformed key surrounding markets, including Thailand’s SET (+10.8%), Indonesia’s JCI (+2.2%) and the Philippines’ PCOMP (-2.6%).
